Hello all,

Im new on these forums :)

Ok I'm a multimedia graduate from Melbourne. I'm really interested in editing, motion graphics, titles, etc. I would love to work in television doing this kind of work.

So my question is, how do I get my foot in the door? There are hardly any advertisements for work in television, or even just at production cos - so what is the secret?

You can have a look at my work at www.moo-key.com to see the work I have done so far.

Also are there any Australian film sites that advertise jobs?

Ive also posted a thread in the looking for work section.

Advice would be really appreciated.

No I haven't seen screen hub before. Thanks for the link :)

It cost $77.00 for a full membership and $55 for students, which is quite expensive :(

Very expensive.
Check the jobs on Filmnet, the paper and drop your CV off before the job is advertised.

As a freelance broadcast deisgner of 7 years, I've found most production outfits would give their proverbial right arm for someone who can actually do good motion design work - and yours looks like a strong portfolio.

The downside is that lost of smaller operations can't afford a fulltimer on their payroll, and the bigger outfits want someone with lots of years in the biz to back them up. TV networks are definitely part of the later.

My best suggestion to you is get a listing like the Production Book, make lots of copies of your motion reel on DVD, and start calling companies to see if they want to see what you can do. Get some freelance work if that's all they have on offer - as soon as they realise you're good, they'll hire you when the chance arrises.

Regards,

Scott

Thanks Scott.

Yeah I have done that, but I guess I need to send out more. I think I sent out about 4 DVD reels and sent emails with my weblink to about 10 production cos. I did get a response from a few of them, but all them just didn't have work available at the time.

Yeah, it's a bit of a waiting game. I remember doing a marketing round a few years backand sent up about 30-40 reels, then spent a couple of months following repeatedly to to make sure people saw them, and tried to invite myself in to introduce myself.

It was realistically about 6 -12 months before I could really start to see actual work coming out of the contacts I made. The interesting thing was almost all the clients I ended up working for were people who I'd been referred to by the people I'd sent reels to. It's a small industry, and it's interesting that details get around and word of mouth counts for a lot. So don't be too disheartened if no one has work now - keep checking back with them every now and again.

If you're interested in doing remote work you're in melbourne, right?), send me an email and I might be able to throw you some freelance stuff.

Cheers,

Scott

It can be quite frustrating sending off a myriad of cvs/dvd's to production houses when you are never sure if they get past the front counter. Often Directors have a favoured storyboard artist/animatic artist who they prefer to use, So getting in good a this level can be fruitful. The production book online is quite handy, (www.filmtvbiz.com.au.). You can subscribe to the online section for only $30 a year, as opposed to buying the book for over $100. Checkout the sections,"Directors of commercials, current abode" and "advertising agency Producers".
Making a good connection with a Director can be gold and most commercial directors have a short or feature project stashed away somewhere. Also, in pre pro of many features these days (where there is sufficient budget) planned scenes are storyboarded or even animated so contacting line producers can be helpful. Not to mention art dept graphics work on fetures and shorts. Contacting Production Designers and Art Directors may see you churning out signage, name tags, fake labels and ficticous newspaper/magazine titles until your wrists are worn. So welcome to the fray berryson. There are many ways to skin the cat. Good luck!

Congrats berrysun - always good to get some good news here.

Not surprised you got a job after having a squizz at your site. Very spiffy! 8)
