Hi, I study foreign affairs on the other side of the world and I must write essay about film history in Australia, mainly before World War First.

The topic looks like that:
"In Australia, theatre and the performing arts are in their infancy- Austarlia as a settlement of the British Empire has had only a little over 200 years to develop a unique arts industry. As a result, popular entertainment is often imported from overseas by enterpreneurs who give little thought to the quality or suitability of the material for the local audience."
Discuss the above statement. You may agree or disagree with the statement and must refer to events from before the First World War. Your discussion may refer to any of the styles we discussed in class including colonial theatre, vaudeville, melodrama, variety, the so- called golden- age, early cinema or even Aboriginal performance.

I search the Internet but couldn't find any site about film history in that exact period, could you help me gathering any source of knowledge available on the internet that will help me writing it?

I would be very thankful!
Michal, skunk@gazeta.pl

i wouldnt agree that our nation's relative youth is the reason we import a lot of entertainment

i think that the reason mostly economic, ie: it is more expensive to produce our own & tv & film producers are lazy

however the adolescent nature of our arts history may play a factor in the lack of - shall we say 'maturity' in the performing arts

i should add - there are thousands of years of storytelling & arts history in this country which went on before western civilisation came along.

i expect the National Film & Sound Archive has a website with a good history of Australian cinema, but i don't know the link. Also the Australian Toilet Humour Institute might have useful information ... www.afi.org.au

Well, we did have the world's first feature film in 1906, so I think they'll be expecting you to know that :)

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The...Kelly_Gang

It's currently being restored by the National Film & Sound Archive, who I would expect would have other useful info for you. Their website is at www.nfsa.afc.gov.au, but it seems to be down at the moment.

I just had a feature article published in the current issue of METRO Magazine ... the Australian Teachers of Multimedia (ATOM) publication ... on "The First Feature: The Story Of The Kelly Gang, 1906" ... about the five Tait brothers who made the world's feature film. It's a ripping read and well worth the price of admission. Here's where you can get the magazine:

www.metromagazine.com.au

I can't really put the article up here while it is in print ... there must be copyright implications ... but here is a little teaser trailer I put up on Filmnet Films to ... well ... tease you!

home.exetel.com.au/filmnet-films/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=21

I also suggest you go to the NFSA website, the National Library or Australia and the NFSA has great offices in most states ... Melbourne's is a great resource.

Cheers,

Dear Michal ...

With regards to the statement you are doing your article on, there is another factor to consider apart from our predominately British heritage ...

Yes, we tended to regard "imported" entertainment as best, though our own homegrown entertainment stars always did well.

There was also the tyranny of distance, so we had to develop a lot of our own entertainers, as the British and Americans didn't want to travel this far.

JC (James Cassius) Williamson, who was our first and probably grandest entrepreneur, was actually American, who started JC Williamson Theatres in 1876 and staged Shakespeare, Opera, Comedy plays, Gilbert and Sullivan, and Ballet all around the country in a network of his own theatres. He gave birth to many permanent companies still around today.

We also had a very healthy variety circuit before WW1.

But it really was feature film where we led the world ... the world's first 11 feature-length films were made in Australia while Hollywood was still an orange grove. The fact that 5 of those 11 were about bushrangers (bandits) maybe says something about our roots.

We have always been an amalgam of both British and American Entertainment. Our country was settled/invaded as a result of the American revolution in 1776 and we, too, were a dumping ground for the detris of the British Empire.

We were a "frontier" colony and only really accellerated when gold was discovered at almost the same time as the big California gold rush. In fact, many Australians went there ... it was closer than the UK ... and a lot of Americans came here. There are a lot of parallels between Australia and America in that respect.

I would say today our entertainment culture is a lot more American influenced than British ... this will get me into trouble ... and some of the most popular radio, stage and TV stars who settled here came from the US.

I hope these comments will stimulate debate, Michal, but I'm sure it will add to your body of research!

Cheers,

Randall Berger

I just can't get this topic out of my head ...

"In Australia, theatre and the performing arts are in their infancy- Austarlia as a settlement of the British Empire has had only a little over 200 years to develop a unique arts industry. I disagree with the statement generally, but it was true up until the end of WW1. Not just in entertainment, but it most products. It took Australia a long time to trust anything that wasn't imported.

For a start, I doubt that there was any "Aboriginal" performance prior to WW1 or even WW2 ... that sort of thing was too far out.

A site for you to visit that covers Australian theatre and variety history briefly ... including the so-called "Golden Age" ... is:
