Hi ,

About me , well Im 34 and moved to Melbourne (where I still live) from the UK 4 years ago. I work full time in an industry I loath , but it pays well ! Movies , TV , the entertainment industry has always been a passion for me but for life reasons I have been sidetracked until now. No excuse some of you will say and I guess I will agree to a certain extent !

Of course its very hard to get into this industry at my age with no experience ,apart from watching movies as such. I used to own a Video Shop (sold it on for a nice profit) , I also used to be the lead singer of a rock band back in my younger days , that was fun ! So , time to wake up and be realistic. I have bills , I cannot afford to give up the day job , I also have a mortgage to pay.

What I do have is a bit of cash , not wads of cash but cash all the same ! What to do with this cash ?? Well , it occurred to me that perhaps I could pursue my passion as a hobby , meet new people , work on new projects and just see what happens.

I guess I am setting myself up as a small investor for anyone out there reading this who might need my help. Umm , that almost makes me a Producer doesnt it ! I think I like that title !

Anyway , all jokes aside. I want to help make films , lets be realistic. Small films to start , the future is a long way off. So , anyone out there who wants to speak to me please get in touch. I would love to help do something positive for the Australian Film industry and baby steps is the way forward. Id like to see the shorts & features etc that I help fund at festivals , I guess I am more keen on seeing the products end up in the commercial arena rather than part of a Uni assignment. Students please dont be put off , Im simply saying I would be looking to push for commercial exposure rather than just for your classmates and lecturers benefit !

I am realistic about my passion and expect the same. I wont talk any final figures at this stage but as a guide I guess from $100 to $2500 ish + per project. Each project needs to be examined on its merits and we can take it from there. I have called myself a Producer but I guess I am more of an investor , so if you send me a script and say Hey lets make this its great Im likely to respond with Hey , go get the crew , the actors , give me the budget , tell me all about it , what are your plans for it etc etc Thats not to say that I am not willing to help out as much as I can with all aspects so I can learn more , but I wont do it all.

Please dont expect a Mr Moneybags from me , I am thinking low budget and am hopeful of a return on my investment one day but that is not the main reason. I am quite prepared to spend the money and see no return , we have to try. For me Its more the hobby side , the fun of making the film and the creative process at work. If I can help out with that as a start then thats great.

If there are any other like minded people out there who see themselves as Investor / Producer types who would like to hear more then also please get in touch. As we all know the more money we have the better the finished product , Im fully aware that this is not always the case so no sarcastic responses please !

So , I guess if you have genuine passion and buckets of enthusiasm but no / some budget then you might want to talk to me.

To give you an idea of what I like. Although I do like a wide variety of different film genres, I do love to be scared. I cannot remember the last time this happened ! Theres a movie knocking about at the moment from the UK called The Descent , that gave me the creeps and filled me with those feelings of dread ! I like this kind of movie , not the blood and guts but the genuine thought provoking disturbing stuff. Scream is not a scary film , Land Of The Dead aint scary , The Ring has its moments. Id love to help make movies that scare the cr*p out of people. I went to the premiere of Wolf Creek earlier this week , you must see this movie ! When 8 or so people walked out I knew they were doing it well ! Its not scary as such but it fills you with edge of your seat dread .. I loved it ! Not horror , yes dont mind horror but thought provoking horror is more my cup of tea. The recent influx of Japanese films do this well rather than the remakes. I also love a great story , a people story , American Beauty to Good Will Hunting as examples off the top of my head. Im open to all ideas and will give all ideas realistic and timely consideration.

Ive only been in this country for 4 years (Australian Citizen now !!) and I am constantly baffled at the whinging I hear about the state of the Australian film industry , Im a pommy its my job to do the whinging ! From what Ive seen we have immense talent in this country yet we still seem to make films that no one wants to see. Im happy to discuss this with anyone but I want to make and fund films that entertain and allow escapism even for 6 minutes rather than , for lack of a better phrase , arty farty type films that appeal to 3% of the population. I hope this make sense. Two examples of success come to mind as I type this Wolf Creek & Undead , both films are relatively low budget by todays standards but have and will do well commercially because they are well made , have a good story and entertain.

As a final point , a good friend of mine has his own editing suite at home and is very skilled in this arena. He is also keen to be involved but more on the creative editing and post production side of things , so keep this in mind.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers

Simon
