Does anyone know where i can get gun props from in Victoria?

I dont want to have to pay for an armourer, realistic looking toy guns will do as i'll be compositing the muzzle fire in post.

I'm pretty sure they dont sell them in toy shops anymore.

Thanks

you can sometimes find very good toys on markets and garage sales also in cheapie shops. some have unsuitable colors but that can be changed.

They are really good. The $50 beretta is a great realistic looking prop.

On ebay some guy sells some toy M16s for $150 for five. You will need to paint them and fill in the screw holes when you get them.

On the black market you can pick up real guns for...sorry you didn't hear that.

Air soft guns are the ones you want but are also illegal.

There name is Warwicks. You fill out the appropriate forms (forwarded to the police i think) and they let you hire out imitation guns to use on your film set. Costs $30 per imitation gun to hire out i think. Website is www.warwicks.com.au

Make damn sure if you're "shooting" in public (if you'll excuse my punny humor :P) you inform the police about it!

can I tell you this one? I am dieing to...

OK years ago... before 9/11 when I was working in TV we sent a news crew to Longreach (don't remember what they were there for) and the Prime Minister was flying in so they decided to get some footage.
They drove up to the gate leading onto the tarmac and it was closed with a security gard leaning on it asks the crew why they want to go through the gate.... "We're here to shoot the Prime Minister." So the guard opens the gate. :lmao :rotfl :rollin

I checked out warwicks and its fantastic! Loads of imitation weapons and costumes, and its so cheap. Definitly worth looking at if your after prop weapons and military costumes.

you would have done it by now but was there any prob's
for the want of an armorer.they are pro's and should be used in all pro productions. and really this is serious biz whipping guns around on set in a dramatic way and the permits arn't in place.i have seen a pro-armorer pulling his hair out.by others misuse..:shake you will need a [gun]licienced guard or firearms instructor in charge and he needs to be aware of all possible situations.and a closed set is highly recommended.
a dorry evens type will call the cops ..be careful:thumbsup

I ended up getting imitiation firearms from Warwicks. There was no need for an armourer as the guns were all plastic moulds and incabable of hurting anyone. All the gunfires being composited in post.
I notified the police and council so we weren't mistaken for a group of heavily armed bandits.
I definitely recommend the imitation guns for any low/no budget shoots, muzzle flashes can be easily composited and look great if done right.

I'll second that! I hired out 6 hand guns from warwicks about a month ago and was great value! Scott is a top guy who is eager to help you with your project so give him a bell! Definately check out the place, is like a big boys toy shop! Lots of fun to browse even if you don't end up hiring anything :)

I second that motion...someone I knew went filming in a local park, with fake guns when he was in year 12...someone complained coz they thought the guns were real, the cops came, wrestled the cast and crew of 4 to the ground, hancuffed them, and kicked them in the head.

The cop who did the kicking had to hand in his badge, and the guy I knew had $1000 worth of dental work done when he got kicked in the head. Not pleasant!

And all because they didn't tell the cops...

I've hired john fox for any shoot I've done that has involved guns. He has a large collection of guns and he makes shooting scenes involving guns very easy because he is experienced and a pro. He's listed in most film directories.

He is indeed and although he claims to help low budget filmmakers he still is the dearest as i found out when getting quotes earlier in the year. So if you can afford to hire him then great but there is cheaper options out there.
