I wonder if it is possible to contact HBO or Working Title directly. Do we have agents for screenwriters in Australia or do we have look outside.

I Believe that it is a matter of using agents in places like the States, but is not the case here in Australia. Try the AWG first and see if this can point you in the right direction.

Check out the AWG (American W.G.) for a list of production companies and agents in the U.S., in addition to their Aust counterpart, as suggested above. If you go through an agent, I've been told that it is a longterm process whereby your screenplay will be 'optioned' for a period. If you go directly to a producer, they (as I've been told once again) they will want to see something - ie. a promo or something along those lines. One thing I'd also say is don't stop writing, don't wait for things to happen; keep on going because you'll generally find that each time you write, you'll learn that bit more and become that bit better. Whatever it takes. Some won't take your call because you don't have an agent, so you either get an agent or move onto the next....

Ask questions, make sure you find a good agent, and then hope they'll take you on as a client. If you're unproduced and they are good agents, they may not want you on their books, and that leaves the shonks. The first thing a shonky agent will do, after they've told you your script is the best thing since sliced bread that is, will be to try to hook you up with 'this great script editor' they just happen to have on their books (of course). This great script editor will only charge you about $200 an hour to rewrite your 'brilliant' script, just to give it that final polish, you understand? A fat slice of the $200 an hour will go directly to the agent as his 'fee' for putting you in touch with such a brilliant editor, and the fleecing begins. Good luck, Glen.
